2020-21 Unit Plan
Painting and Drawing

Mission Statement

The Butte College Painting and Drawing Program is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the technical and aesthetic aspects of two-dimensional art. We are committed to teaching the importance of overall artistic competency, and providing students with direction in commercial and independent artistic futures. Our studios are designed to foster creativity, and provide students with the tools, equipment, and facilities needed to build, prepare, and create their envisioned works of art. Our instructors offer a well-rounded art education, following curriculums that incorporate art history, theory, and a multitude of painting, drawing, and design concepts. We believe in the importance of a multidisciplinary study, and offer our students the ability to install art exhibitions, critique artworks, and prepare portfolios for employment and higher education purposes.

Program Description

Our program consists of course offerings on the main campus, as well as the Chico Center every semester. Classes are offered on the main campus in two classrooms (ARTS 130 & 137) and in one classroom (rm 153) at the Chico Center. We have one full time instructor, and seven associate faculty members.

The Painting and Drawing area of the Arts departmen provides the foundation and training for students to succeed in the two-dimensional studio arts. Our program offers courses that are part of the Art AA degree as well as transferring to other institutions to allow our students to receive higher degrees in the Arts. It also provides the training to assist students in finding careers in fields related to the two-dimensional arts.

The eight courses in the Painting and Drawing program are designed to prepare students for either employment or transfer to a four-year college. Two of these classes are core requirements for our Studio Arts AA degree, and transfer and articulation into CSU, UCs, and specialized Art schools programs for the Studio Arts Degree (BA or BFA). The additional six classes that we offer are hands-on, studio lab experiences in various areas of the two-dimensional arts. These courses allow our students to experience numerous mediums and avenues in the field of Art, as they discover their desired career paths. Over the past years, we have deleted a number of peripheral classes that did not directly support the program learning outcomes and transfer degrees for the Painting and Drawing program. The remaining courses are central to our career and transfer preparation mission and are incorporated into our proposed certificates.

Student Learning/Administrative Unit Outcomes

Discussion and collective dialogue has occurred as a result of the assessment activity. The faculty have engaged in documenting how well students are learning in their courses and the program as a whole.  The results showed that the majority of students utilized various drawing and painting materials and methods in the creation of art works, including design elements and construction techniques extremely successfully. Those that didn't were noted to have poor participation and/or attendance. Many of them resulting in FWs. The faculty are working on minimizing future FWs by contacting absent students more frequently and dropping them as necessary. The students in the intermediate and advanced levels all demonstrated a reasonable knowledge of contemporary artists, art historical styles and art vernacular, and applid these to  critiques of the classes artworks. The faculty agreed that further knowledge is needed and that introducing more artists and art history visually via overhead projections will help the students gain a broader base of artists to draw from and discuss. The advanced painting students all formulated a personal art-making philosophy and articulated it in relativity to the art world. The faculty will be working on guiding the students into deeper philosophical statements about their works. The drawing courses reported solid observational skills and technical abilities from the majority of begining students with an increase in creative responses from the intermediate and advanced students. The faculty will be spending more time discussing personal style and creatity to their classes to foster continual growth in these areas.

Standards/Goals for Student Achievement (Instruction Departments)

Our latest data from Fall 2019 shows that the painting and drawing program offered 13 sections with a 88..9% fill rate and 88.6% overall rention. These figures show about a 10% to 15% increase in enrollment in our sections with the retention rate staying about the same as the previous two years. Art 7,  2-D Foundations course shows the highest fill rate at 91.7% which is expected as it is required for the Studio Arts AA-T Degree, the AA Degree in the Arts and is an elective the Art History AA-T Degree. Art 8, Beginning Drawing has the second higest fill rate at 90.0% and it is required for all of the above Degrees. It's fill rate shows slightly less as there were five sections of Art 8 offered as opposed to two for Art 7 this semester.

Our overall program succes rate in the Fall 2019 semester was 76.3% which is slightly down from the years before at 81.% and 77.2%. This is no suprise as the community underwent the Camp Fire in November 2018, and the students were affected as a whole.

Our painting and drawing area is currently creating two certificates of completion to be added to the data report starting Fall 2021. Currently we do not have data to support individual degrees and transfers in our specific studio classes only. We are aware that  many of our students transfer to four year institutuions yet do not have separate data on these figures for the painting and drawing area apart from the Art department transfer and degree data as a whole.

Standards/Goals for Student Achievement (All Other Departments)

The painting and drawing area of the art department is supporting the college to meet the Vision for Sucess goals by implementing 2 new certificates of completion. These certificates will focus on two separate areas. One will incorporate courses in foundation based courses encouraging students to take a variety of core classes in the two-dimensional arts. The second certificate will be geared toward thoses students looking to obtain a career in the arts. Both certificates will benefit the students in transfer degrees in the studio arts.

Strategic Direction

The painting and drawing department are supporting the college in meeting its Strategic Direction and Priority Themes by implementing strategic scheduling on both the Main Campus and the Chico Center. We have evaluated the enrollment trends and block scheduled our courses to work within the parameters of the greater college unit. We adjusted the Chico Centwr courses to begin at 9am instead of the fromer 8am time slot. This adjustment raised enrollment significantly in the morning classes and did not negatively affect enrollment on the Main Campus. Our block scheduling and class time changes has helped in meeting enrollment targets.

Program Review

The painting and drawing program has addressed these concerns and recommendations by creating ongoing dialougue in person amongst the full-time faculty, associate faculty, technicians and staff. The full-time faculty member in this area meets every firsy Tuesday of the month to discuss our program and department with the rest of the full-time art faculty. The areas concerns and needs are brought to the meetings and discussed and resolved. We are also spending more time meeting one on one and visiting eachother's classrooms to collaborate ideas. We are currently collaborating in a group show in Sacramento to create more "collegiality and collaboration across the department."

Re: The Validation Team noted that "... the Art Department lacks optimal levels of cohesiveness, as seen in the variances in style, quality and tone of the program review document, despite significant time and effort spent, and compelling results in some sections. It suggested that the Art Department would benefit from more collegiality within programs and within the department as a whole (including both faculty and staff)." The Validation Team recommended that "...the Art Department explore ways to enhance regularly-scheduled face-to-face communication and build collegiality and collaboration across the department."

Department Goals

The painting and drawing area of the Art Department has been working on meeting enrollment targets, meeting student achievement goals, fostering a culture of inclusiveness and strengthening professional development. By focusing on scheduling and course offerings we have been able to keep our enrollment numbers up during this time of decline in the overall enrollment in the college. We have looked closely at our program and are currently designing two certificates of completion to assist students in achieving their educationa and professionall goals. Our faculty and staff are a united team and we meet and discuss our program, our professional needs and our artistic ventures. We are currently planning a group show in Sacramento for the Butte College art faculty to strengthen professional development and foster collegial relationships.

Requested Non-Financial Resources

Advertising assistance.

We have developed a marketing campaign - Unleash Your Creative Side.  We need help marketing this to local communities who are unaware of what we offer in Art, Design, and Performing Arts, or were put off by the lack of opportunities the college offered during the last deep budget cut and the repeatability changes.

Current Financial Resources

None. In the past, we peridically held 3 day painting workshops which typically generated about $1000 to $1500 each event. These workshops have not been conducted in a few years due to the colleges new insurance requirements for external non-employees. Any monies generated by these streams enters into a painting and drawing foundation account which in turn is used to subsidize materials and supplies needed for students in the classroom.
